Few perennials are as satisfyingly carefree as the Yarrows. They barely require any water once established and maintenance consists of cutting off the occasional spent blossom. The abundant white to deep pink flower are borne in flat-topped corrycombs on 1.5-2’ stalks. These are most attractive in the summer garden from June to September or cut for arrangements that can last in the home for months. The gray-green aromatic foliage makes a lovely contrast with deeper greens in the landscape. Achillea millefolium spreads by means of underground rhizomes. If divided regularly it will not exceed a 18-24” spread. It is native to islands off the California coast and enjoys full sun in mild areas to partial shade in the warmest climes, well-draining to clay soils and little to moderate water once established. Hummingbirds and butterflies find the blossoms irresistible but happily deer and rabbits find it less than tasty.
