Ajuga ‘Chocolate Chip’ grows as a dense low mat, more compact than other Ajugas, and is freely acknowledged as the dwarf of the species.   Ajuga will quickly and happily cover any soil that is regularly watered and has good drainage.  While ‘Chocolate Chip’ is considered to be a little less aggressive than most varieties, take care to not plant it near lawns as it may attempt to take over.  Ajuga ‘Chocolate Chip’ can handle a wide range of sun exposure, but for best bronze color, make sure it gets at least 3 – 4 hours of sunshine a day.  Spring and early summer usher in a liberal sprinkling of periwinkle flower spikes that rise above the foliage to be about 3 inches tall.  Tight and short, Ajuga ‘Chocolate Chip’ makes for an almost maintenance free lawn substitute for areas that don’t get much foot traffic.
