A smaller species than Alnus rhombifolia, this Italian native will quickly achieve 40 feet with a 25 foot spread. Though deciduous, it is only briefly defoliated, typically from December through March. The rich glossy heart-shaped leaves are deeply veined and finely serrated. Interesting yellow to white catkins appear before the leaves emerge and the fruit resembles very small cones that cling to branches even in winter.
