Native to the southeastern coast of Africa, this decorative large shrub is beloved for its attractive flowers, handsome foliage and medicinal properties. Perhaps the most widely cultivated aloe in the world, it will reach 10 feet high and wide. Branching stems bear large rosettes of gray-green spiny-edged leaves. The leaves are long and fleshy. In the winter, cylindrical vivid red to orange flower racemes appear borne on tall spikes with several often appearing from the same rosette. Given full sun and well-drained soil it can tolerate some frost and is very easy to grow. It is drought tolerant once established. An attractive and impenetrable hedge, accent plant or element to the medicinal garden, Aloe arborescens is worthy of its popularity.
