Native to South Africa where the belief in its medicinal uses has contributed to its popularity, this small succulent bears upright narrow leaves 1-2 feet long. Forming a rosette that is spread by offsets, the leaves are gray-green, fleshy and toothed on the margins. Some specimens show white spots on the leaves. Yellow tubular flowers densely borne on a 3 foot stalk in the spring and summer are popular with hummingbirds and bees. Give full sun, little to moderate water once established, and well-drained soil. Aloe vera is widely used to treat burns, bites, and inflammation. It is hardy to 20°F. Like all Aloes, it is an excellent addition to the rock garden, to xeriscapes, and it thrives in pots.
