Despite being a coastal California native, Asarum cadatum is an exotic looking plant.  Although it hails from the fog belt, with its low light and consistently cool temperatures, the glossy leaves and delightfully alien looking blossoms can thrive in much warmer climes, as long as they get shelter from direct sun and receive regular irrigation.  Roots and leaves have a spicy scent, hence the common name of wild ginger.  The adventurous may be inclined to try using the root as an actual substitute for ginger but take care with the leaves, those aren’t edible.  Use this plant as an interesting groundcover where low light conditions prevail.
