If you love the look of Bougainvillea, but don’t have a good place for a large vine, ‘La Jolla’ might be the perfect solution.  ‘La Jolla’ has a more compact and shrubby habit than most Bougainvillea, so you don’t have to look for a place to let it climb.  Cold hardy to 25°F and drought tolerant once established, Bougainvillea ‘La Jolla’ is both showy and sturdy.  Be sure to plant in full sun for the best show of color.  Do be sure to wear puncture resistant gloves when handling Bougainvillea; those thorns can be fierce.  Prune in spring, after danger of last frost has passed, and shape as best suits the garden it’s in.   It’s hard to go wrong with those fluffy clusters of violet tinged red.
