Buddleia ‘Nanho Purple’ is a delightful dwarf variety, with lovely violet blooms.  Buddleia is commonly called ‘Butterfly Bush’, as it functions as a magnet for hungry pollinators during the summer months, when most plants have finished their spring displays; both butterflies and hummingbirds flock to the panicles of small honey scented blossoms.  Deadhead Buddleia regularly to maintain a tidy appearance, encourage repeat blooms, and to prevent the unintentional spread of seeds.  Buddleia is moderately drought tolerant once it gets established, but with adequate irrigation, it will soak up all the heat and sunshine it can get.  Adding a little garden lime to the soil seems to improve the foliage and bloom, as does planting where it will receive full sun.  In most parts of California, it never gets quite cold enough to force Butterfly Bushes into a real dormancy, and they end up performing like an evergreen.
