The gracefully shaped leaves and vivid purple, honey scented blooms of Buddleia ‘Royal Red’ are surefire eye catchers in the summer garden. Buddleia is commonly called ‘Butterfly Bush’, as it functions as a magnet for hungry pollinators during the summer months, when most plants have finished their spring displays; both butterflies and hummingbirds flock to the panicles of intense red-violet flowers. Deadhead Buddleia regularly to maintain a tidy appearance, and to prevent the unintentional spread of seeds. ‘Royal Red’ isn’t quite as huge as the straight species, topping out at around 6 by 6 feet, but does still benefit from substantial pruning during after the bloom has finished. Buddleia is moderately drought tolerant once it gets established, but with adequate irrigation, it will soak up all the heat and sunshine it can get. Adding a little garden lime to the soil seems to improve the foliage and bloom, as does planting where it will receive full sun. In most parts of California, it never gets quite cold enough to force Butterfly Bushes into a real dormancy, and they end up performing like an evergreen.
