With showy flower clusters looking like a postcard from the tropics, Caesalpinia pulcherrima brings a taste of the exotic to wherever it grows.  Fiery red and orange blossoms attract hummingbirds and butterflies alike, while the feathery green foliage softens nearby hard lines and borders.  Do be aware of the sharp spines on the branches; they may not always be obvious, but they are there. This Caesalpinia will freeze to the ground in the colder parts of its range, but vigorously rebound with the warm weather of spring.  If a more compact mound is desired, cut it down to the ground before it breaks dormancy.
