Carpenteria californica, also called Bush Anemone, is a handsome California native shrub, and the variety ‘Elizabeth’ is prized for its dense growth habit and clusters of lovely flowers. Those flowers are brilliant white with yellow stamens, and sometimes twenty of them can be found at the tips of the stems. The foliage is a lush green and bitter to the taste, so deer leave it alone for the most part. Make sure Carpenteria gets a bit of shade in hotter climates. Carpenteria californica also hits the sweet spot for water needs; it can be happy with garden-type irrigation all its life, but once established it can also be quite drought tolerant.
