A BIT MORE...

Celtis occidentalis is a good, quick growing shade tree for urban areas. Smooth grey bark in youth matures to an irregular, corky texture that disguises some of the more indelicate attentions likely to be encountered in cities. Leaves look not unlike an elm tree, but maybe a little larger, and fruit is very small, dark purple, and well-loved by birds. Celtis occidentalis roots tend to grow deep, and unlikely to buckle sidewalks. Celtis prefers loamy moist soil, but is adaptable to just about anything with reasonably good drainage and can even be drought resistant once the root system is established.
