A spectacular ornamental tree, the Desert Willow is a southwestern United States native that produces fabulous large flowers from May through September. Trumpet-shaped and deep purple with yellow markings at the throat, the blooms grow in clusters for maximum effect. Its medium green leaves are narrow, curved and long like those of a willow. While rangy growth habits can be easily corralled with attentive pruning, it is also attractive to those who embrace more free-form, unconventional shapes. Chilopsis linearis creates a nice border and is fantastic in containers as well. Among its greatest features is its drought tolerance. Once established, it needs very little supplemental water even in desert or intermountain regions. Growing to approximately 15-30’ tall and 10-20’ wide, it does an excellent job screening and allows for dappled shade beneath its limbs. It attracts birds and butterflies and is fire defensible as well. Best suited to full sun in Sunset Western Garden zones 3b, 7-14, and 18-23, Boething Treeland grows these in 15 gallons as well as 24” and 36” box sizes.
