A Bit More

Catalpa bignonioides and Chilopsis linearis together at last! Marrying the huge flowers borne on Catalpa bignonioides and the condition-hardy character of Chilopsis linearis yielded a match made in heaven. Bearing grand pink orchid-like (Catalpa again) blooms from spring through fall, Chitalpa tashkentensis is best positioned in full sun and watered only every now and then once established. It makes a fantastic multi-trunk or standard tree and is deciduous. It is cold and drought resistant, perfect in desert or intermountain regions. Sunset Western Garden book zones are 3-24. Boething Treeland grows these in 15 gallons, and 24”, 36” and 48” boxes. A wonderful “statement” tree with its long narrow leaves offsetting the frilly blossoms, it rather quickly matures to 20-30’ tall with a similar spread. It also makes an excellent hedge when grouped together. Long-lived, Chitalpa has an expected lifespan of 40-150 years – I wish I did!
