Looking for something tall, dark and handsome? Look no further! The Japanese Blueberry Tree is an evergreen of Asian origin that is dependably attractive as a hedge, lawn or street tree. Its ability to withstand cold snaps makes it a nice alternative to other hedge trees like Prunus caroliniana or Ficus nitida where frost is an issue. Its densely foliated branches leave little room for gaps, handy where privacy is an issue. It will achieve 60 feet tall and 30 feet wide given optimal circumstances and is well-suited to Sunset Garden zones 8, 9, and 14-24. It also makes a nice standard tree with a rounded head that casts a good amount of shade. Leaves emerge rusty orange maturing to a deep green and eventually turning red before they drop. The drop is infrequent. In summer, small lantern-shaped white flowers will emerge before forming blue berries which contrast beautifully with the occasional red leaves. Full sun and regular water keeps it happy and healthy. It seems unscathed by any pests and requires only very occasional pruning. Bees, butterflies and birds find it attractive, as do I!
