This densely foliated evergreen shrub is fantastically adaptable and is often a subject for topiary. It is equally popular in its natural state, particularly as a windbreak or hedge. Becoming 8-10 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide, its leathery dark green glossy leaves are attractive year-round. In the spring when a flush of tender bright green foliage emerges, flowers will too. The blooms are showy and attract bees while the small dark round fruit that follow these attract birds. Some find the scent of the flowers less than wonderful. Of course, these would be removed with shaping or pruning. Ligustrum japonicum ‘Texanum’ shear well and are often seen as pyramids, globes, and poodle forms. They are also easily made into a standard tree by removing the lower branches to establish a single trunk. They require regular water and prefer partial shade or full sun. They do well in the desert and throughout Sunset Garden zones 3a-24 and H1, H2. A deer resistant and fire defensible native of Japan and Korea, it is a popular choice throughout California and the western United States.
