This legendary “Southern Belle” may be the state tree of Mississippi but western states have fallen hard and wide for her big glossy leaves and fragrant white blossoms. Evergreen and fairly fast growing, it promises to make a bold statement with its 40 foot height and 30 foot spread. Magnificent 14” wide flowers are its crowning glory though the large leathery deep green leaves with fuzzy brown undersides are attractive in their own right. Most often used as a specimen tree, it also functions well as a windbreak when planted side by side. Careful positioning is key to success. Well-drained rich soil with an acid soil amendment is key at planting time. Mulching, deep irrigation, ample room and fertilizers rich in iron chelates will result in vigorous glorious Magnolias. Few trees have the panache of this impressive cultivar known for blooming at a young age. In Western Garden Zones 4-12, 14-24, and H1 and H2, it will achieve a dense vaguely conical crown if not espaliered or pruned to an intentionally different shape.
