A BIT MORE...

A widely popular western California native, this evergreen low-growing shrub or ground cover blankets the ground in attractive foliage and, beginning in March, pretty blue flowers clusters that stop nature lovers in their tracks. At Boething Treeland Farms, ‘Yankee Point’ outsells all other Ceanothus varieties. As its native habitat is the coastal rocky slopes just south of Carmel, California, be prepared to provide excellent drainage as well as full sun and very little water once it is established. Sunset Western Garden Book suggests zone 5-9, 14-17, and 19-24 but be aware that it might require winter protection in zones 5-7 and 14 where temperatures occasionally dip below 20°F. Inland, it is best to give it at least partial shade. Rarely exceeding 3 feet tall with a 8-10 foot spread, it can be pruned after bloom time though pinching during the growing season is equally successful. Its glossy 1 ½ inch oval dark green leaves cover the crawling long branches densely. It attracts butterflies and birds, is unaffected by salt sea spray, high winds, or drought and discourages deer looking for their next nibble.
