An evergreen palm of prehistoric origins, the Mediterranean Fan Palm has earned our respect for its tenacity and its beauty. A vestige of the Pre-Pliocene era (that’s over 5 million years ago lest you have lost track of your prehistoric time periods), this distinctive and compact survivor will tolerate desert or seacoast conditions, inhospitable soils and strong winds without even the slightest whimper. Broad green to blue green fronds grow on clumps that were once offshoots. They mature to 20’ wide and tall over many years’ time. What’s the hurry after all? Perhaps these were used to fan Cleopatra many moons ago? Give full sun or partial shade and medium water in Sunset Western Garden zones 4-24. They do very nicely in containers, are excellent by pools, and make a fiercely protective hedge if planted side by side. Remember too that Chamaerops humilis make outstanding candidates for up-lighting and are more frost hardy than many other palms. I think it is fair to say that these tenacious little palms are here to stay!
