A petite cultivar with narrow, red-brown leaves, Phormium ‘Jack Spratt’ is almost grass-like. This New Zealand Flax has clumps of narrow, twisting leaves that grow 18” tall and wide, making it a fine size for planting in containers, in cozy gardens, or in masses. Cold hardy to 15° F and tolerant of shade, drought, and coastal conditions, plant Phormium in full sun to part shade. From the ancient greek phormos, meaning wicker basket or mat, Phormiums are used by the indigenous Maori of New Zealand for woven baskets and mats, and the fibers are used for rope, fishing nets and clothing. Use Phormium ‘Jack Spratt’ in traditional, tropical, Mediterranean, Asian and Contemporary gardens.
