Vinca minor is a very useful and beautiful low-growing perennial that roots where it touches the soil. It makes a fine cover on slopes or hillsides and remains green year-round. In spring, happy little purple flowers appear and last though mid summer. This dwarf variety will scramble along the ground and up walls or over surface tree roots while maintaining a maximum height of 4-6 inches tall and a 3 foot spread. If it starts to look rangy or unkempt, simply shear it before the spring new growth is expected. Brilliant green glossy and vibrant oval to oblong leaves eventually become dark green and leathery. The lavender flowers are a simple pinwheel shape, a bright and jaunty addition to the landscape. Vinca minor works beautifully in Sunset Western Garden Climate zones 1-24 and enjoys full sun in milder climates and partial sun in warmer environments. It is not a very thirsty plant once established and tolerates shade and cold with aplomb. A native of central and southern Europe, it is a lovely solution plant wherever soil is troublesome and makes a lovely border edging, container subject, or ground cover substitute. They pair beautifully with geraniums, daffodils and salvias, just to name a few! The larger cousin, Vinca major is larger and more robust in its growing practices. Both are available at Boething Treeland Farms.
