Buddleia davidii (sometimes also spelled Buddleja) is impressive in size, hardiness, and loveliness of bloom. Commonly called ‘Butterfly Bush’ Buddleia functions as a magnet for hungry pollinators during the summer months. Butterflies and hummingbirds flock to the panicles of its intense and dark blue-violet flowers. Deadhead Buddleia regularly to maintain a tidy appearance, and prune aggressively when dormant if you want to restrain the potential 10 x 10 foot spread. Buddleia is moderately drought tolerant once it gets established, but with adequate irrigation, it will soak up all the heat and sunshine it can get. Adding a little garden lime to the soil seems to improve the foliage and bloom, as does planting where it will receive full sun. In most parts of California, it never gets quite cold enough to force Butterfly Bushes into actual dormancy and they end up performing like an evergreen.
