Calliandra californica is a delightfully whimsical addition to your garden of heat and sun loving California natives.  Commonly called Baja Fairy Duster, the open branching structure and soft fern-like leaves are the perfect backdrop for the blossoms, which are lovely little bright red sprays of stamens.  Calliandra californica blooms year round, with the showiest display from spring through fall.  The flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds.  Fairy Duster is well suited to quick-draining sandy soils, and once established, is drought tolerant only needing watering only every 3-4 weeks.  Plant Calliandra californica in areas where it will thrive in full and reflected sunshine.
