Carex tumulicola is possibly the most popular sedge in the Bay Area, and for good reason. Native to California and parts of Washington, this Carex is tolerant of wet soils, but can also handle periodic bouts of dryness in cooler areas, once it’s well established. Hardy and adaptable, Berkeley Sedge will form graceful tufts of dark green leaves in the landscape. Carex tumulicola can be used as a lawn alternative, and will hold its own against tree roots. Spikes of greenish flowers will appear around late winter or early spring, shear them as they start to turn brown to prevent aggressive reseeding.
