A Bit More

A cheery accent for shady landscapes, Dianella tasmanica ‘Variegata’ has medium-green strap-like leaves with creamy-white colored stripes. Fans of these handsomely variegated leaves grow in a cluster that stands 3-4’ tall and 2-3 wide. In the summer, violet-blue flowers rise up on stalks before turning into unusual purple berries.  Exercise caution, as the berries are thought to be toxic.  This native Australian perennial is naturalized in shady, moist forests, and prefers partial shade and good drainage. Use the leaves and berries of Dianella tasmanica ‘Variegata’ in cut floral arrangements, and plant in masses or as accents in shade or mixed-woodland gardens.
