This large shrub or small tree is one of Boething Treeland Farms’ top 20 most popular trees. A flush of purple foliage is a dramatic and beautiful foil to the medium to light greens in the landscape. The long narrow purple to bronze leaves are 3 to 4 inches long and ½ inch wide and acquire an even deeper shade with the winter cold. A New Zealand native, it requires full sun to retain its distinctive purple color. Purple Hopseed Bush can be trained to form a tree by singling out a single stem but its natural shape is shrubby. It will quickly reach 10-15 feet in height and width. It seems to adapt well to all kinds of soils and responds to regular water by growing faster but otherwise does just as well with low water. It makes a lovely screen in the landscape and does well on slopes or clipped to form a formal hedge. It thrives in desert conditions and Sunset Western Garden zones 7-24.
