A Bit More

Looking for glorious fall color in a low shrub? Have a need for ground cover on a rocky slope or hard-to-reach area? Then consider Rhus aromatica ‘Gro-low.’  The species is native to the Chicago area (cold hardy to well below -30° F), where this shrub is found in open glades and moist thickets. Growing from 1.5 to 2.5’ tall, this decidous rambler spreads by root suckers to 6-8’ wide. Its attractive, medium-green leaves are arranged in three leaflets that release a clean, citrus scent when crushed. In the spring, before new leaf growth, little yellow flowers emerge from the tips of its upright branches. In the summer, these flowers produce hairy red berries that are attractive to birds. In the fall, the foliage turns into a showy display of orange and red. Plant this fast-growing shrub in full sun to part shade. It is tolerant of rocky and poor soils, but provide good drainage and occasional water for best results. Use Rhus aromatica ‘Gro-low’ on slopes, as ground cover, or in mixed borders.
