A deciduous tree of Chinese and Japanese origin, this small tree makes an excellent subject for bonsai or for the patio. A slow-grower that will not exceed 25 feet in height or spread, it has an attractive habit of spreading low growth but which can be thwarted by pruning to achieve a more upright shape. The leaves are 3-lobed and 1.5-3 inches long and emerge with a reddish tint that matures to a brilliant light green. In the fall, these become red, orange or yellow. Also interesting is the flaking bark that may tend toward gray, orange or brown. It is reportedly drought tolerant once it has reach maturity. This gives the Japanese Maple or Acer palmatum a run for its money!
