Celtis australis is a good tree for urban areas, as they can tolerate less than stellar air quality and a wide variety of soil types. A good medium to large selection, Celtis provides shade in the warm months, and lets the warming sunlight through during the cool seasons. Leaves have a serrated-type edge, and are a pleasing shade of bright green, and the bark is smooth in texture, and soft grey. This tree does produce small, dark purple berries, edible by birds and people, though the tastiness seems to be a greatly personal preference. The seeds in the fruit are rather hard, and marble-like, so planting above concrete or asphalt should be considered carefully.
