This large evergreen tree is prized for its beautiful foliage, lovely scent and fabulous shade distribution. Its glossy green leaves emerge in shades of pink to bronze, particularly in the spring as dropped leaves are gradually replaced. Particularly well suited to lawns and large spaces, these specimens can top 50 feet in height and 60 feet in width. The pronounced structure with substantial trunk and a natural umbrella shape is stunning in maturity. Small flowers emit an intoxicating scent in the spring and these are followed by a small black fruit. Attractive to birds, butterflies, and bees, it has a long history of use as a medicine and naturally repels many insects. Excellent in desert regions, it becomes drought tolerant over time and thrives in full sun or partial shade.
