While there are many more Magnolias as there are states in the union, these flowering trees are often associated with the South. Here in California, however, Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ is one of our most popular trees. Its manageable size and narrow form allows even those with small gardens eligible for an evergreen Magnolia. Tolerant of damp soil, heat and seacoast conditions, it does best where the roots have room to roam. Often used in containers, in lawns or on buffer zones or as a screen, its slow growth rate allows plenty of time for pruning (makes a great espalier) though its naturally pyramidal form is most pleasing. The 5-6” wide fragrant white flowers appear in spring and last through summer when their pods full of bright red seeds begin to evidence themselves. The leaves are dark green and glossy on top and rusty brown beneath. Topping out at 25 feet with a 10-15 foot spread, it is a low-maintenance dream in Western Garden zones 4-12 and 14-24. Boething Treeland Farms carries these in 5 and 15 gallon sizes as well as 24” and 36” boxes.
