Coast Redwoods are fabled trees, the oldest and arguably the largest living trees on earth today. In fact, one contender for this honor, the Del Norte Titan is over 380 feet tall and contains more mass than 15 adult blue whales. Each year it produces enough wood to create a 90-foot tall, 12” diameter tree! Perhaps such a specimen is not your goal, quite understandable considering our shrinking landscapes. Not to worry. Only optimal foggy conditions with severe cold yields a tree of 70 feet in 25 years. In a typical environment (Sunset Western Garden zones 4-9 and 14-24), it will attain perhaps 50 feet over many years. Consistently ramrod straight with spongy red brown bark, it bears its flat leaves on horizontal branches. Sequoias look marvelous grouped in groves and even make a nice hedge given ample room. They love regular moisture and are good candidates for lawn use. It does not seem bothered by oak root fungus, an increasingly important consideration. It will attract birds and butterflies but not deer. Like many California native species, it thrives in full sun or partial shade. Sequoia sempervirens ‘Aptos Blue’ sports, as you may have surmised, blue-green foliage. Its branches bow earthwards just a bit.
