Every landscape needs a focal point and more than a few rely on Prunus cerasifera ‘Krauter Vesuvius’ to take center stage. Striking dark purple leaves make a statement in nearly any landscape and are the perfect foil to predominantly light green foliage. Blessed with a naturally graceful oval head form and an average height of 18’ with a 12’ spread, it can fit well into even the most compact venues. Their shade is not so dense that plants will not grow below their canopy, an added bonus where space is at a premium. In spring, single pale pink flowers make a glorious display and herald the advent of warmer temperatures. Little to no fruit production makes this an excellent candidate for patios, sidewalk, or median locations.. Best in Western Garden zones 3-22, this deciduous beauty is cold hardy, fire defensible to within 0-20’ from a structure, attracts birds and butterflies, and is deer resistant.
