A BIT MORE...

Native to the southeastern United States but easily adapted to our western zones, Quercus virginiana can lend distinction and character to the landscape. Known for being able to sweep the ground with angled branches, they were often grown this way intentionally by Native Americans to serve as trail markers. Picture a typical southern plantation and you will no doubt envision a central driveway flanked by rows of Quercus virginiana dripping with Spanish moss.. With a low center of gravity and deep root system, it is particularly sturdy, withstanding hurricane winds with aplomb. They are also resistant to salt spray, fires, and drought. Its vast head spreads yards of shade as the densely foliated branches reach upwards of 80 feet! A mature specimen will usually be approximately 40-80’ tall and 60-100’ wide though it takes many years to achieve such height and girth. It thrives in full or partial sun, medium to low water and nearly any type of soil that drains well. The leaves are shiny dark green on the top and fuzzy grey on the bottom while the acorns are oval, shiny and nearly black. These are full-fledged ecosystems sustaining various species of birds, squirrel and even deer. Its dark thick bark distinctively sheaths the trunk in texture and beauty. Boething Treeland grows these fabulous evergreens in 15 gallons as well as in 24”, 36” and 48” boxes.
