A BIT MORE...

This dwarf variety of the popular Strawberry Tree with confine itself to 10’ or less. An excellent evergreen tree native to southern Europe and Ireland, it is remarkably adaptable to various climates and uses. Whether in the desert, at the beach or inland, Arbutus unedo will thrive in the full sun or part shade, particularly in the desert. Naturally multi-stemmed, it will make an excellent screen left to its own devices but is easily pruned into a single trunk tree that will develop an open crown. The latter form allows the handsome red bark to be fully appreciated. Dark green leathery leaves are oblong and 2-3 inches long. In the fall and winter, beautiful small greenish white flowers appear at the same time as the bright red “strawberry” textured fruit which can be tasty but is more often not. It adores well-drained soil and little to regular water. It is a good candidate for container planting and makes an excellent street or lawn tree. Deer steer clear of this variety. It is hardy to 15-20°F.
