Named for Dr. Clark Abel, an early 19th century British doctor and horticulturalist, this beloved evergreen shrub responds well to serious pruning but will reach 3-5 feet tall and wide if left unchecked. Suggested exposure is sun to part shade and evergreen to 15°F.. While the leaves emerge a shiny bronzy red, they mature to a vivid green color that remains glossy and attractive. Pretty trumpet-shaped lavender-pink flowers with a barely visible orange throat appear in showy clusters summer through fall. This is a compact shrub with a more open shape than other grandiflora species formed by lacey arching branches. The graceful form adapts well to selective pruning rather than shearing. It is an excellent candidate for borders & hedges. It is deer & seacoast resistant but irresistible to hummingbirds and butterflies.
