A striking low-growing shrub year-round, Abelia grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’ is so named for the variable colors of the foliage. At certain times of the year, the leaves are a bright green, later they become yellow with chartreuse centers which mellow to shades of gold and darker green. In the fall, they are a stunning yellow, orange and red. Also appearing from pink buds are white scented flowers that persist from late spring through fall. Attracting bees, birds, and butterflies, it is fabulous in containers or as a low accent shrub. Tidy by nature, it grows to 2-2 ½ feet tall and 3-3 ½ feet wide with a moderated growth rate. It does best in full sun to partial shade and has average water needs. It also does well by the coast and in Western Garden zones 2-24. If you wish to prune this little charmer, do so in the winter.
