A Bit More

This lovely shrub is most loved for its showy bell-shaped ruby red flowers. The branches tend upright, with an arching shape. A quick grower, specimens may reach 8-10 feet in height and width and respond well to spring pruning. Hardy to 25°F, they crave moderate to regular watering, excellent drainage and full sun with afternoon shade suggested in the hottest regions. The large blooms pepper the attractive foliage from spring through fall and sometimes year-round. The discerning eye will also be drawn to the handsome maple-shaped leaves. The flower shape resembles that of a Chinese lantern, hence the common name. As the long-lasting blossoms have a tendency to look downward, Abutilons make excellent subjects for hanging baskets, espaliers, or containers. This is a dependable flowering shrub that has enchanted more than a few, including those of the hummingbird and butterfly extraction! How lucky we are to have easy access to Abutilons that were once considered a prized species carefully nurtured by Victorian horticulturalists in their climate-controlled conservatories.
