A Bit More

Acacia baileyana ‘Purpurea’ is a stunning small evergreen tree. The emerging feathery foliage is a dramatic lavender to purple shade that turns blue gray with age. Blessed with a naturally graceful umbrella shape, this Australian native will grow rapidly to approximately 20-30 feet with a 20-40 foot spread. It will likely reach full height in 3 years. This makes its typical life span of 20-30 years more palatable. It is blessedly low-maintenance, seldom affected by drought, disease, wind or frost once mature. Acacia baileyana ‘Purpurea’ will seed easily and is hardy to 25°F. We recommend full sun and deep watering to establish deep rooting. It responds well to pruning which coincidentally encourages a greater show of lovely lavender leaves. Masses of brilliant yellow fragrant flowers make this tree a show-stopper in early winter through spring. It is named after award-winning Australian botanist Frederick Manson Bailey who traveled extensively to discover new species and authored no fewer than six books on plants in and around Australia.
