A charming small evergreen tree or large shrub used often where a fast-growing screen is desired. Reaching 20 feet in height and width, this Australian native, gives dense protection from wind and is not bothered by dusty conditions or slopes. It is hardy to 20 or 25°F and conveniently resists oak root fungus. It is also tolerant of drought and disease, and it is not considered a tasty treat by the deer population. A strong root system that will even do well in sand, it bears bright green short leaves that become nearly obscured by gold flowers in late winter or early spring. The flowers are loosely borne on short spikes. A naturally rounded form may be pruned to form a small tree. Apparently the pods are useful for making yellow dye and the leaves for making a green dye.
