A Bit More

Acer ginnala ‘Flame’ is an excellent small tree.  It works nicely as either a stand-alone specimen, or as part of a deciduous privacy screen.  The blooms are tiny, but have a pleasant fragrance.  Later in the summer, clusters of showy scarlet red winged seeds called samaras festoon the branches.  Like many trees, this one performs best with some irrigation, but once established it needs very little water in years with average rainfall.  Acer ginnala is particularly well suited to urban environments; pollution and difficult soils don’t seem to give it difficulties, and since the height rarely exceeds 20 feet it won’t generally interfere with power lines.
