These trees are nearly as striking defoliated as they are foliated. The bark turns a brilliant red in the winter with a good cold snap. Of course these prized deciduous Japanese maples are beautiful in the spring and summer as well with a vigorous upward growth habit, deeply lobed green leaves with red edges, and a manageable 20’ height limit. Fall’s cooler temperatures encourage the leaves to become golden yellow. Perhaps their finest hour is early spring when the branches and trunk are still red and the lime green leaves are just emerging. In southern California and other warm climates, it is wise to shelter it from hot, dry winds and direct sun and to give it consistent water. These are particularly well-suited to containers and to bonsai but they are equally lovely in a garden setting. Their non-invasive root systems make them excellent subjects next to patios or walkways.
