A Bit More

Acer rubrum ‘Armstrong’ is a deciduous tree native to the low, wet areas of the eastern United States and Canada. This cultivar is distinguished by its very narrow (15-20 feet wide) form. Large green star-shaped leaves are 3-lobed and yellow, orange, or red in the fall. Given full sun, it will develop a dense shady crown whereas part sun will render the tree more open. It tolerates nearly any kind of soil but prefers moist, slightly acidic conditions. It is excellent used as a specimen, shade tree, or for privacy screening and hedges due to its dense, vertical growth. It is particularly effective in tight spaces where horizontal room is limited. Urban pollution tolerant. Excurrent habit when young, decurrent with age. Fire-resistant. Cold hardy to -40°F.
