Leaves have a sharp, terminal spine. Uses include containers, in xeriscaping, rock gardens, as small screens or barrier plants. Ideal in sandy or rocky soil, but needs good drainage. Best in full sun to partial shade; needs protection in hot inland climates. Monocarpic. Fire-resistant. Deer and rabbit-resistant. Cold hardy to 25°F.
