Named for its velvety, split flowers that resemble the paws of our favorite Australian marsupial, Anigozanthos is a reliable addition to the garden. ‘Red Cross’ Kangaroo Paw has red blooms covered in dark-red fur that give this hybrid its name. Anigozanthos ‘Red Cross’ form upright 4-6’ x 2-3’ sized clumps of narrow green leaves from which stalks of brightly-hued flowers appear. Plant Anigozanthos in an area of full sun, with good circulation and drainage. Cold hardy to 25-30° F, Anigozanthos also does well near a south-facing wall or near a high canopy with bright shade. Drought tolerant once established, provide water throughout the dry season to keep the foliage fresh. Anigozanthos ‘Red Cross’ makes handsome floral cuttings and is a favorite of hummingbirds.
