A Bit More

With handsome red bark, deep-rose flowers and yellow to red fruit, Arbutus unedo ‘Oktoberfest’ provides visual interest all year round. This Arbutus grows more as a large shrub up to 6-8’ tall and wide. An excellent evergreen native to the Mediterranean, ‘Oktoberfest’ is remarkably adaptable to various climates and uses. Whether in the desert, at the beach or inland, it will thrive in the full sun, but give it partial shade in the desert. Naturally multi-stemmed, it will make an excellent screen left to its own devices, but is easily pruned. Dark green leathery leaves are oblong and 2-3 inches long. Hardy to 10°F, plant in well-drained soil and provide little to regular water. Deer resistant, the fruit of this shrub provides forage for birds and squirrels, and the nectar is loved by hummingbirds. Use Arbutus unedo ‘Oktoberfest’ in Mediterranean, low-water and Contemporary landscapes.
