A Bit More

Native to Sonoma, California, this evergreen shrub forms a 5-6 foot tall mound with a 7 foot spread. A fast grower, it will reach full size in 5 years or so. The outer branches take root, making this an excellent choice for banks or slopes, particularly those where fast-draining soil and a east or northeast exposure is available. They love full sun or part shade. The branches have the characteristic Manzanita smooth red bark and glossy dark green leaves. In the late winter or early spring, white to pink bell-shaped flowers appear followed by berries that are irresistible to birds, butterflies, and bears. They will eventually become very drought tolerant and require little water at that stage.
