A Bit More

Introduced in 1976 by the Saratoga Horticultural Foundation to celebrate Sunset Magazine’s 75th anniversary, the Sunset Manzanita is a staple foundation plant in the west. This native shrub is densely covered in glossy leaves that are red when new and mature to a medium green. In the spring, umbels of white-pink blooms attract hummingbirds and other pollinators, and the berries attract other wildlife. Underneath the thick foliage are dark, reddish-brown branches with attractive, peeling bark. ‘Sunset’ grows 3’ tall and twice as wide, a terrific size for foundation plantings or large scale ground cover. And, yes, it takes to pruning and hedging like a champ! Cold hardy to 0° F, Sunset Manzanita is deer resistant and tolerates sand and clay soil. For best results plant Arctostaphylos ‘Sunset’ in full sun and well-drained soil.
