A Bit More

Berberis thunbergii ‘Crimson Pygmy’ is probably the most common Japanese Barberry, and for good reason.  The rounded form and smaller mature size make this moderate grower easier to maintain and enjoy than the straight species parent plant.  ‘Crimson Pygmy’ still has thorns though, so care is needed when handling the plant.  Those thorns also mean the deer tend to leave it alone.  For a pop of bright red in the spring that mellows to a bronzy burgundy as the leaves mature, plant Berberis ‘Crimson Pygmy’ in areas with full sun and good drainage.
