A Bit More

The large leathery leaves and rising flower stalks topped with tiny hat-like flowers of Bergenia cordifolia look like something out of a Victorian storybook.  Add to that the brilliant bronze/red kissed leaves of the ‘Winterglow’ variety, and a finer groundcover for shade can be hard to come by.  Bergenia cordifolia prefers moist humus rich soil, but will tolerate dryness once established.  Bergenia will spread slowly by rhizomes, and looks striking in a dedicated bed, or interspersed with Hostas, smaller ferns and Hellebores.
